The Things I Do: Meetin’ and Eatin’ with Some Empowering Women

I’m super excited to have been invited to The New Revolutionists’ Meet & Eat, with founder Laura Burhenn of the Mynabirds. Why? Because I love lunch.

I’m doubly excited because I’m also really into The New Revolutionists project in general (even without lunch), which highlights empowering women (from artists, doctors, mothers, etc) through a portrait project, “pay[ing] tribute to the fact that women who stand up to injustice are rarely pristine; they get their hands dirty”.

Getting your hands dirty > being pristine, in my book. Duh. Have you seen my sorry excuse for a manicure ~~lately~~ always?

Also- One of the best things about being in a band and touring is getting to travel around the country/world, and I think it’s such a great idea for Laura to use this opportunity to coordinate these lunches and dinners, spreading the word on the initiative and finding more interesting people along the way.

Let’s recap that in bullet points:

lunch (i love it)
cool girls doing cool things is cool
in the world of small worlds (and small girls), Shervin Lainez who has photographed many a Tortoise & Blonde artist, shot and edited a video from The Mynabirds’ Spring 11 Tour (didn’t mention that above but I felt like throwing this in here)

meeting people on tour is awesome, and even more awesome when you do it for a good cause

During our Internet Week galavanting, we stopped by Tumblr’s Storyboard launch at Tribeca Grand Hotel on Tuesday. Duh. We <3 Tumblr & Tribeca Grand!

The Wall Street Journal covered the event, mentioning Bianca as an attendee and dubbing her a “Tumblrer-about-town”. Sounds about right. She’ll probably add that to her bio.

So Into It: Molecular Addictions

Oh hey y’all what could be sexier than science and jewelry? Science-y jewelry based on molecular structures of addictive substances. THAT’s what. Even the phrase molecular addictions just rolling off your tongue (no pun intended), is sexy.

Among said addictive substances in the collection are MDMA (L), Nicotine (C), and THC… but for those who might like to sport/support something a little tamer (or sweeter), they’ve got a necklace for the Chocolate (R) molecule too. As someone who has a severe chocolate addiction… I can definitely vouch that that is a thing. A really addictive thing.

Can we also give them a high-five on the product descriptions, which give you a little background on each substance? Hence adding some substance to your jewelry purchasing experience… har har, (ok we’re getting punny now).

I mean in case you didn’t know

Check out Bianca in this Blackberry commercial for Gawker (and Gizmodo & Deadspin)

If you’ve ever spent any IRL time with Bianca, you’ll notice very quickly that her Blackberry is glued to her hand, so when Gawker was in search of interesting (dare was say BOLD) people for this series, the match seemed serendipitous.

Dripping in Sorrelli’s MiMi jewels, and wearing non-prescription Tortoise & Blonde frames *shrug*, Bianca talks about being passionate, risk taking, and working with brands you love.

Dancing is involved- duh. (Though the other Small Girl would like to clarify, most of the dancing in the office is done by Bianca- sequestered to her seat behind her giant monitor out of Mallory’s view… unless she can get Mal to dance with her)

We’re excited to announce Small Girls’ newest client Sorrelli!

We’ve partnered and collaborated with Sorrelli for quite some time, so we’re excited to further strengthen our relationship by working with them in an ongoing retainer capacity.

Founded by designer Lisa Oswald right here in Brooklyn almost 30 years ago, Sorrelli was born out of necessity. As a close friend of Keith Haring during his rise to fame, Lisa was invited to fabulous parties but as an intern, couldn’t afford the clothes to match. Lisa was resourceful and drew from her design background to begin creating her own bold statement pieces to drape around her neck or wrist and pair with the same simple, black dresses while attending these events.

After receiving compliments and inquiries on where to buy them, she cultivated the collection into a business so successful that she ended up enlisting her two sisters to come down to NY to help her run the company.

Sorrelli - an adaptation of the Italian word for sisters, sorelle - is a tribute to not only Sorrelli’s begginings but also its future, with Lisa’s oldest daughter Lily now operating at Chief Marketing Officer and Lily’s sisters assisting with marketing operations.

They’re excited to come back to the city where they were born and make new blogger friends, so feel free to drop us a line and meet them for tweet ups or sparkly fun.

So excited for the sparkly magic to come with Sorrelli and Small Girls!

The Things I Wear: You Ridin’? I’m Ridin’.

Guys, I’ve never been on a motorcycle before. That’s a fact. Until this past weekend that is. In this new fun/adventurous date situation with this boy, I got to cross riding on the back of a motorcycle off my bucket list.

The thing is, upon hearing that I was going on a motorcycle riding date on Saturday, my friend Theo who was shooting a video with one of the bands on his label requested that we come as extras and bring the bike… therefore hijacking our date. [This seems to be a pattern with our dates…]

And so what I thought was going to be an afternoon spent riding around my neighborhood, turned into an afternoon at a music video shoot… which THEN turned into a ride over the Williamsburg bridge into Manhattan (beautiful), riding around in lower Manhattan, and then riding through the Holland Tunnel (which kind of made me feel like I was in Tron). By the end of it, I basically decided I don’t ever not want to be on the back of a motorcycle ever. I’m actually kind of sad I’m not sitting on one right now.

Purse- Charming Charlie (which came in SO handy when he told me that I couldn’t wear my regular purse and had to have something cross body… but had to be big enough to hold everything I needed)

Sportbike- Kawasaki Ninja
Helmet & Gloves- idk, they were his… but I’m seriously toying with the idea of just owning a helmet for myself. You know, for parties and such. Helmets make for great accessories… albeit hard to drink and makeout in.
