“There’s something to be said when your attitude complements or supplements your music. But when it doesn’t complement or supplement the music…it just… doesn’t make sense. Does that make sense?”- G
We were discussing a recent write-up about a band we know from the scene. Rather than really reviewing the music, it was more about the persona of said band. Obviously as a musician, he would judge a band by their sound, how good they actually are, the credibility of their so called “hits”, etc. It’s interesting to analyze how the public perceives a band by the image that they create for themselves, over the music. It happens all the time, I think mainly in the pop sphere… but obviously transcends through other genre’s, in this case indie rock. I see his point, in that if the frontman wasn’t so dearly loved and positioned by the press (creating this essence of ‘cool’ for them), they would just be another indie band in the downtown NY scene.
I see how this can be disconcerting to fellow musicians… but it’s also genius at the same time. I guess at least they make music (regrdless of whether it can be qualified as legendary*), and aren’t like those who are famous but do abolutely nothing….
Does that make sense?
*obviously it’s subjective
